Weight: why is it so easy for some to never put on weight
Do you know someone who can eat anything and not put on weight? Whereas if you so much as smell food, we do? If you have wondered why, it is time to find out.
In short, there are many factors that determine this.
Within our bodies are enzymes and transport proteins that manage fat. For example, lipoprotein lipase. Lipoprotein lipase is a key enzyme that helps break down fat in the body.
Some people produce lipoprotein lipase more efficiently. Some people do not.
The ones that do, have a genetic variation that makes them burn fat faster for energy.
Stress and hormones play a role. If you are stressed, your hormones are fluctuating, it affects the way you process fat. Stress hormones like cortisol push the body to store fat around the abdomen, while thyroid hormones determine how quickly you will burn fat.
If you don’t sleep well or don’t exercise, it affects the way you process fat.
A person with high insulin sensitivity may easily store fat after a meal, while someone with lower sensitivity may shunt more fat into circulation.
Your gut health also matters. Certain bacterial strains are more efficient at extracting calories from food.
The outcome?
Two people can eat the same meal and end up with different outcomes.
Different fat metabolisms is not a problem. It just means that you need to work on different levers to change the way your body achieves energy balance.
Evolution designed humans to adapt.
Some bodies are wired to store fat as insurance against famine. Indians, for example. Others burn it quickly to stay agile and mobile.
Neither is good or bad. What matters is whether you understand your unique signature and build a process to optimize it.
What ever your circumstances, slow gradual change, built incrementally, day after day will be your best protocol to achieve your desired goal.
