Vertigo: can you remove the crystals that cause it?

Vertigo: can you remove the crystals that cause it?

You tilted your head to look up at a shelf. Or rolled over in bed. And suddenly the room lurched sideways.

Your stomach turned. Your eyes couldn't fix on anything. This wasn't dizziness from standing too fast. This was something else entirely.

Deep inside your inner ear sit three fluid-filled loops called semicircular canals. Their job is to detect movement and send precise signals to your brain.

Resting nearby is a structure called the utricle, lined with tiny calcium carbonate crystals called otoconia. They normally help you sense gravity and linear motion.

But sometimes they break free.

When these calcium crystals detach and drift into the semicircular canals, head movements shift them through the fluid.

They stimulate sensitive nerve hairs. And those hairs fire false signals to your brain. The brain receives a message that your head is rotating when it isn't.

The result is benign vertigo.

Here's the important part. You don't dissolve them. You relocate them. The Epley maneuver works by allowing gravity to guide these free-floating particles back into the utricle.

In the utricle they can no longer stimulate the cupula and trigger vertigo.

Best done with a doctor, you turn your head through a precise four-step sequence. Each position is held for 30 seconds.

The crystals migrate through the canal with each rotation, like marbles rolling down a tube, until they settle somewhere harmless.

The cure rate? Approximately 80%.

No medication. No surgery. Just geometry and gravity working on your behalf. You can also learn a modified version at home.

Sit on your bed. Turn your head 45 degrees toward the affected ear. Lie back quickly. Wait 30 seconds. Rotate your head to the opposite side.

Wait again. Then roll your body and slowly sit up.

Your inner ear is not broken. It just lost something in the wrong place.

One simple maneuver can put it back.

NB: Ideally do this in the presence of a doctor to avoid any complications.
