Everyone needs to have a purpose in life. After a lot of distillation, I found mine.

My purpose is to achieve Upekkhā.

If you haven’t heard of the term, allow me to explain. I have the privilege of meeting many people daily. Making a difference to their lives gives me great joy.

But after so many years of interacting with others, it is also clear that the path to living a good life is paved with challenges, difficulties and adversities.

I would not be amiss in saying that our patience is tested daily.

Which is why Upekkhā.

Upekkhā does not translate directly into the English language. You see, it is more a concept that a word. A concept of how you might want to structure your mind.

I will do my best to use English to explain. Equanimous, anchored, calm, at ease, at peace and yet strong, resilient and purposeful.

No, I am not there yet. But do recall, I said it was my purpose, not an achievement.

Do imagine being able to live that way. It would be a life of joy, where you are not constantly swept away by the trials and tribulations of life.

Because life is difficult. No matter who you are. You know that, already.

So how can we sprinkle the right understanding that might ease your pain. Too many people chase momentary joy. Diversions, short lived pleasure.

Let me drown myself in my food and drink, you might say.

Instead, imagine a state of mind that gives you joy. Unbridled joy. Because you are self-contained. You have everything you need within. Your state of mind gives it to you.

This by no means implies denial. Give yourself what ever you deserve. But give it from a place where you are already satisfied.

Satisfaction is a state of mind not an outcome of what happens out there.

Upekkhā helps you achieve it.
