Essential Minerals - especially for the older generation

I am using an arbitrary cut-off of the age sixty. If you are above this age, what I am about to say matters. If you are not, it still matters.

The minerals you eat and absorb on a daily basis.

Calcium. Your bones become thinner with age. Without enough calcium, your bones will become fragile. Women, in particular, are at higher risk after menopause. Low calcium leads to osteoporosis.

Magnesium. It helps your muscles relax. If you are low on magnesium, your legs may cramp at night. You may also feel anxious, tense, or have trouble sleeping.

Zinc. As you grow older, your body’s ability to fight infection gets weaker. Zinc supports your immune response and speeds up healing.

Iron. Especially if you are vegetarian or have digestive issues. Low iron means your blood cannot carry enough oxygen. You feel tired, breathless, or dizzy.

Potassium. Without it, your blood pressure may rise. It also supports nerve signals and muscle function.

Selenium. It helps your body fight oxidative stress, which increases with age. It supports your thyroid and boosts immunity. A shortage can leave you vulnerable to prostrate cancer.

Chromium. It helps your cells respond better to insulin. Without it, sugar lingers in the blood. You feel tired, crave sweets, or risk developing diabetes.

Copper. It supports red blood cell production, iron metabolism, and bone strength. By the way, zinc, taken for immunity can quietly block copper absorption.

If you are low on any of these minerals, you may not feel it at first.

But over time, your bones will weaken. Your heart may beat irregularly. Your muscles may hurt. You may feel exhausted.

Eat foods that are rich in minerals. Eat them in natural form as far as possible. If you absolutely cannot then supplement.

These minerals work in micrograms.

But their impact is enormous. After sixty, every detail counts.
