Mind: but why is it thinking all the time?

Your mind is thinking all the time. Try as you might, you are unable to make it stop. Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts!

But have you ever wondered why?

Why cant your brain stop thinking? After all, everything needs a break.

So why shouldn't your brain?

The answer lies in the fact that you are alive. For as long as you are alive, your brain will process information.

As long as it processes information, it will have to think. Is my heart beat fine? If the blood too thick in my arteries? And so on.

Processing of information, internal or external requires your brain to think. Of what you and I call "thoughts."

Sure not all make it to the surface. To be part of your awareness. But your brain is thinking nonetheless.

When you inject the external world into the equation, you now get more familiar "thoughts."

Which is the reason we find it so hard to shut down the brain. Our system is "always on" as a means to protect itself.

So then if the system is meant to think, why should we try to shut it down? Or even slow it down really?

Wouldn't be better off, much safer so to speak, if our brains were always thinking?

In fact, that is your default mode. To remain in a state of heightened alert, always ready, always analysing.

But the question becomes one of how much is too much? Beyond a point, will the ability to think overwhelm our ability to do so?

In some sense, this is an efficiency problem. If I could think that much to obtain a suitable answer and then stop, life would be great.

I would not suffer from "over thinking."

Which is why practice helps.

The practice of knowing how much is too much, how to apply time and effort and when to give up.

If you can master this, you would be in far greater control over what you and I call stress.

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi everyone!
