Tomatoes: a powerhouse of health when used well

It is extremely likely that you ate a tomato in some form in the past one week. Tomatoes are ubiquitous.

But did you know just how amazing tomatoes are for you?

Little wonder, then, that across the world, tomatoes are a part of our cuisine.

Tomatoes contain potassium. A single tomato has up to 6% of your daily potassium requirement. Potassium is one of the critical minerals that your body requires, along with sodium.

It has lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant linked to improved heart health, reduced risk of stroke and helps reduce cholesterol.

It has beta-carotene. Beta-carotene can protect the skin from sun damage. It has lutein and zeazanthin, which reduce the risk of age related degeneration of the eye.

It has vitamin A and C, which supports skin and eye. Vitamin C is in itself a powerful antioxidant, which improves your immune system.

Tomatoes have fiber, which improves gut health and helps regulate blood sugar.

It is 95% water, which makes it a wonderful source of natural hydration. Remember, you can fulfill your water needs from food as much as from water.

It has vitamin K and calcium, both of which help your body along with Vitamin D to improve bone health.

Tomatoes are a powerhouse of good health.

There are over 10,000 varieties of tomatoes. They come in all kinds of sizes from tiny cherry tomatoes to large.

They come in all sorts of colours including red, green, orange, yellow and purple. The colors are indicative of the underlying enzyme.

So how can you use tomatoes to improve your health?

The most powerful way is to marry it with onions and garlic. The combined effect makes it among the most powerful anti-cancer agents possible.

Unless advised otherwise, make it an integral part of your diet. Make sure not to over do it. Excessive consumption can lead to migraines, acidity, allergic reactions, and joint pain.
