Ozempic: Should you or shouldn't you?
You have probably never heard of Joel F. Habener. I know I had not. But his work was seminal in creating GLP-1, the now popular weight loss drug. You know it as Ozempic or Mounjaro,
As 2025 comes to a close, it would be worth it to evaluate the impact it has had on our world.
First, the mechanics. What exactly does it do?
To simplify it releases peptides in your body that suppress hunger. Lowering hunger pangs allows you to eat less. The outcome is a calorie balance or deficit, allowing you to lose weight.
In essence, managing calorific homeostasis.
To those who have tried it, it is a magic pill. Without effort, you lose weight, clothes start to fit, and metabolic symptoms start to disappear. You feel better about yourself. It is hard to argue why you shouldn’t do this.
Which brings me to where I stand.
I have had the good fortune to get a ring side view to thousands of people with lifestyle issues. It is apparent that not all are on the same page. Especially with respect to consistency and motivation.
There are simply too many conflicting goals. Socializing, travel, work, stress, life to name a few.
For people who are not able to build a consistent life habit of good health, I would say do the medicine. Remember, you will need to take it all your life. You are replacing a lifetime of good habits with medication.
For those who want to embark on the journey to build good habits, I would say, dont go anywhere near it.
Failing is fine.
Learn from the times when you could not achieve your goals. Disaggregate why. Break it down to the smallest, simplest task that you can do without friction. Eat one less bite. Walk ten more steps.
Slowly build capacity. Discipline and consistency are infectious. It dont just affect weight. It shapes who you are.
Who do you want to become?
NB: Mr Joel F. Habener recently passed away, but his work reshaped humanity. It is not my intention to suggest that the drug is not useful. It is for millions. It just does not have to be so for everyone.
