But he can eat anything, and he never puts on weight. There has to be something wrong with my metabolism. Or genes. Or hormones. Or my stars.

Have you felt this about someone?

If you have, listen in. Let me use my example. A few weeks ago, I found myself at a bar. I did not really want to order anything.

It was way beyond my dinner time. So I ate a ton of the salted snacks and peanuts in front of me.

If you saw me eating, you too could believe that I can eat anything and nothing happens to me.

Another time, I was invited to a party. The host has a generous spread of Italian food. Pizza, pasta, chips. All the stuff I love.

I ate like it was the end of the world dinner.

If you saw me eating, you could easily assume that I can eat anything, and nothing happens. But I have left out the most crucial part.

In both cases, my weight went up.

Not enough to consult a nutritionist. But up nonetheless.

So, why don’t you see it on me? The frank truth is that you can. If you looked carefully. Clothes and the way you dress can easily hide a lot.

Then, I also eat sensibly when you are not looking. So in a week it all evens out. I am someone who would easily qualify as one of those who “can smell food and put on weight.”

But I don't and have not for ten years.

The reason is simple. I am balanced over the year. I have good weeks and bad weeks. I have good years and bad years.

But it is after I reset my weight to a lower set point. Now my weight hovers around my set point.

What you might see is me enjoying my pizza or fries.

Not all the time and effort I put in the rest of the time. I promise you. There really is no free lunch.
